Jurassic Period (199.6 to 145.5 million years ago)
The end of the Triassic period also saw a mass extinction, with 20% of marine species disappearing. The dinosaurs that survived would go on to thrive in the subsequent Jurassic period.
Theropods and sauropodomorphs grew to enormous sizes. This era also laid the foundation for diverse groups like ceratopsians and stegosaurs. Archaeopteryx also lived during the Late Jurassic.
The name Jurassic is derived from the Jura Mountains, which stretch from eastern France to Switzerland. This area contains extensive limestone layers deposited during the Jurassic period.
