Triassic Period (251 to 199.6 million years ago)
At the end of the Paleozoic Era's Permian period, Earth experienced its largest mass extinction. It is said that 90-95% of all species went extinct.
The Triassic period, which followed the Permian, was a time when reptiles expanded and evolved to fill the empty ecological niches left after the mass extinction.
The name Triassic comes from the three distinct rock layers found in Germany from this geological period: red sandstone, white limestone, and brown sandstone.
