Sauropodomorph from Fukui Named - Fukuititan nipponensis
Published:
The sauropodomorph discovered in Katsuyama City, Fukui Prefecture, during the 2007 survey has been given the scientific name Fukuititan.
"Fukuititan nipponensis" means "Fukui giant from Japan."
Fukuititan nipponensis, found in Early Cretaceous strata (about 120 million years ago), is considered a member of the titanosaur group that was widespread in Asia.
About 20 fossils, including the humerus and femur, have been found, and its total length is estimated to be about 10 meters.
This is the fourth dinosaur discovered in present-day Japan to be given a scientific name (the fifth if Nipponosaurus from Sakhalin, now Russian territory, is included). Three of these were excavated in Fukui Prefecture.
