Crest Discovered on Oldest Tyrannosauroid
Published:
Fossils of two of the oldest tyrannosauroids have been found in Late Jurassic strata (about 161 million years ago) in China.
It has been named a new species of dinosaur, "Guanlong wucaii."

One individual is 3 meters long.
A crest 10 cm high extends from the top of its head to the tip of its nose.
The crest is thought to have served not as a weapon or for defense, but for species recognition or attracting mates.
Tyrannosaurus was a 13-meter-long carnivorous dinosaur that lived in the Late Cretaceous (about 65 million years ago). This discovery is likely to be useful in elucidating the evolution of Tyrannosaurus.
