ジュラ紀後期のドイツに、羽毛恐竜 スキウルミムス

ドイツ南部バイエルン州-1億5000万年前の地層から、リスのようにふさふさした尾を持つ恐竜が発見されました。
"Exceptionally preserved juvenile megalosauroid theropod dinosaur with filamentous integument from the Late Jurassic of Germany."と題した論文が"Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences(米国科学アカデミー). 109"に掲載されています。

リスの学名「スキウルス」にちなんで、"スキウルミムス・アルベルスドエルフェリ (Sciurumimus albersdoerferi)"と名付けられました。
これまでは「コエルロサウルス類のみで羽毛が発達した」と考えられていました。
今回発見された羽毛恐竜スキウルミムスは、コエルロサウルス類が発展する以前の別系統をたどっているため、
「今まで考えてきた以上に、恐竜に羽毛があったのは当たり前のことだったのかも！？」との説が浮上しています。
